US Coast Guard Birthday
  • On August 4, 1790, President George Washington signed the Tariff Act, which authorized the construction of 10 vessels to enforce trade laws and prevent smuggling.
  • These vessels were called "cutters" and were part of the Revenue Cutter Service, which was the forerunner to the Coast Guard.
